National Breastfeeding Awareness Month

Author: Tamara Payne

Breastfeeding was a joy-my favorite form of bonding with my daughter. When you embark on a breastfeeding journey as a new mom it comes with more than meets the eye. Choosing to breastfeed is one of the most selfless acts a mom can decide to make. The bond you build with your child through breastfeeding is beautiful and it will never get replaced. It’s beautiful, but it isn’t easy. Breastfeeding is a job! You have to be mindful of what and when you eat and drink, because your body is what provides all the nutrients your baby needs. Your baby might also cling to you a lot more, not only because babies love their mama, but also because they love their food…and you just happen to be both! As with all jobs, breastfeeding come with pros and cons so it may not be easy but it is well worth it!

When I started breastfeeding I had very little information on breastfeeding but I was set on doing it. My will to breastfeed led me to the information that got me through it. Breastfeeding requires a lot of time and patience-especially as a black woman. Resources are harder for our families to come by because breastfeeding can be a harder route to take over formula feeding. Not many people want to help teach and support women in how to successfully breastfeed these days? In my experience, not many! But that information and support IS out there, so don’t let that be what stops you! You are not alone on your journey of breastfeeding. Our journey lasted till 16 months old, I would do it over 1,000 times more if I could. If breastfeeding is the route you choose, never give up! Happy National Breastfeeding Month!"
